Fleas (Siphonaptera) are normally found on pets and domestic animals. Fleas jump from host to carpets and back again. This sometimes results in humans being bitten. If you suspect an infestation, act quickly! Fleas reproduce rapidly, so professional pest control and thorough cleaning are often necessary to eliminate them completely.
Signs of a flea infestation
- Excessive Pet Scratching and Biting: Fleas cause pets to constantly scratch, bit or lick themselves. Look for small, fast-moving insects in their fur, especially around the neck, belly and tail. Some pets may develop flea allergies which will cause redness, sores and even hair loss.
- Flea Dirt (Black Specks in Fur or Bedding): Flea dirt looks like black pepper or tiny specks of dirt. Place on a damp paper towel, if it turns reddish-brown, it’s flea faeces (digested blood).
- Small, Red Itchy Bites on your Skin: Fleas don’t only bite animals and their bites may also be present on your family members. Bites often appear in clusters around the ankles, legs or waist.
- Spotting fleas in your home: Fleas are tiny (1-3mm) but visible. They are fast-moving and can jump long distances. You can look for fleas in carpets, pet bedding, furniture, and baseboards.
